A Brief History of Enzyme Therapy

A BRIEF HISTORICAL OVERVIEW

Enzyme therapy is the culmination of 100 years of research and clinical therapy. As early as 1906, Dr. John Beard used a crude injectable form of pancreatic enzymes on cancer patients. His pioneering work led Dr. Max Wolf to use pancreatic enzymes successfully treating cancer and other diseases.

In the 1940’s, Dr. Edward Howell argued all degenerative disease had its foundation in chronic enzyme deficiencies due to the refining and cooking methods of food. He was the first to use concentrated plant-based enzymes with patients to support digestion of cooked food.

From 1936 to1946, Dr. Francis Pottenger Jr. validated Howell’s argument. Using more than 900 cats for 10 years Dr. Pottenger concluded the causative factor in degenerative disease was a “heat liable substance”. Cats fed only raw foods lived healthy, long lives without degenerative disease. The other groups fed cooked food displayed degenerative diseases, including allergies, arthritis, cancer, cardiovascular disease, kidney and thyroid disease, sterility and other diseases.

Since then, others confirmed Howell and Pottenger’s work. Medical literature documents the use of enzymes in treating a variety of acute and chronic conditions. As early as 1935, doctors used oral enzymes to treat allergies, asthma, second-degree burns, heart disease including fibrinolytic conditions and congestive heart failure.

Most recently, enzymes therapy has become better known through the efforts of Dr. Howard Loomis Jr. For the past 30 years he has lead the work in understanding the relationship between enzymes, health and disease. Dr. Loomis’ work paved the way for a scientifically sound approach in aiding the body to heal.

ENZYMES — THE SPARK OF LIFE

Enzymes do not treat disease but helps the body heal itself! There are no “magic bullets” that cure anything. It is the innate intelligence of the body that heals only when it has the “tools” to do this, specifically, enzymes.
Enzymes are unique protein/mineral complexes. They are the only elements in the body that do work! They keep your heart beating, cause your breathing, move your muscles, and stimulate your nerves. They digest food, defend from invading pathogens, and are responsible for you reading this brochure.

Your body gets enzymes from two sources; those that every cell makes and from raw food. Pottenger and Howell’s work showed eating cooked, processed food robs the body’s enzyme storage to digest cooked food. It is like a bank account continually drained of its resources with nothing being deposited. Eventually, the account becomes empty and we develop disease.

BECA– USE YOU EAT COOKED FOOD
YOU NEED ENZYMES

There are three general classifications of enzymes in human physiology:

1. Metabolic enzymes – made by every cell to carry out its daily functions
2. Digestive enzymes – produced by glands to assist in digestion
3. Food enzymes – those found in all raw, uncooked food.

All food enzymes are destroyed by heat when you bake, broil, can, fry, microwave, pasteurize, roast, sauté, or stew food. Nature put the exact amount and type of enzymes in food to be able to digest itself and spare your body’s metabolic enzymes.

Chewing raw food releases specific enzymes contained in that food – protease digests protein; lipase digests fats; amylase digests starches in carbohydrates; cellulase digests cellulase (plant fiber) in fruits & vegetables.

In the first hour of digestion, food enzymes break down carbohydrates, fats and protein in the stomach. After passing from the stomach into the small intestine, the pancreas releases digestive enzymes to help finish the process. Up to 85% of food can be digested in the stomach before the pancreas releases its enzymes. The pancreas was never meant to supply 100% of the enzymes for digestion. Eating cooked, processed food burdens your pancreas and immune system. Using plant enzymes spares this burden and restores health.

NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS ARE NOT
ENOUGH – ENZYMES ARE ESSENTIAL

You can eat the best organically grown food and take the best nutritional supplements but if you do not digest, assimilate and utilize the food consumed, you will never enjoy the full benefits.

Vitamin and mineral supplements are co-enzyme factors that combine with enzymes to carry out the body’s everyday functions. Evidence shows enzymes enhance dietary supplements because of increased absorption, meaning you may take less dietary supplements and save money.

Life’s daily challenges put a tremendous demand on your body’s supply of enzymes. Caffeinated and alcoholic beverages, sugar enhanced foods, toxins, emotional and physical stress, and even extreme weather conditions cause the body to use up metabolic enzymes at a very rapid rate. Being ill with a fever uses up enzymes quicker as they are destroying pathogens.

Enzymes are lost daily through perspiration, urine and feces. Adding plant-baaed enzymes to your daily regime fortifies your body and stops this constant drain. The body puts a priority on digestion and will steal enzymes from the pancreas, the white blood cells of the immune system and other organ and glands to finish digestion of cooked foods. Eventually this leads to degenerative disease and difficult-to-heal acute conditions.

White blood cells use enzymes to digest pathogenic microorganisms in the body. When they are constantly being drained of their enzymes to digest cooked food, they will not serve their purpose of destroying invading pathogens and allow for infection.

An allergy is simply the body’s inability to breakdown (digest) the substance (allergen) causing the reaction. Enzymes breakdown the allergen-antibody complex and helps the body eliminate the allergen. Using enzymes not only takes the burden off your digestive organs it enhances your immune system. Enzymes are known to regulate an overactive or under active immune system.

ENZYME NUTRITION THERAPY
21st CENTURY NUTRITION

In the 1980’s, Dr. Howard Loomis Jr. collaborated with Dr. Howell who had researched enzymes’ role in health and disease. Dr. Loomis treated patients daily. With Dr. Loomis’ clinical experience and Dr. Howell’s decades of research led to a better understanding of enzymes function.

Dr. Loomis developed a systematic approach to diagnosing enzyme deficiencies in patients. His is a time proven method in assisting the body’s ability to heal. It is designed to meet individual needs. This is determined by different tests described below.

Structural Analysis – Gravity is one of the major principles affecting everyone. Muscle contractions pull the body in adverse ways. This phenomena creates stress, producing deviations from normal.

The Digestive Function Test features abdominal palpation testing before and after a Challenge drink to determine organs and glands stressed by either malnutrition or digestive demands.

Palpatory Reflex Exam – used with the Digestive Challenge Test, this exam uses 33 trigger points to determine which glands and organs respond to stress brought about by carbohydrate, fat and protein.

24 Urinalysis – A 24 hour urine catch is analyzed for markers that show how well the body is maintaining homeostasis. The main function of the kidneys is to filter the blood and discard waste products, toxic substances, water, salts and excess acids and bases. Any deviation of the normal function upsets the balance of the body. It includes sediment rate, calcium ans chloride index, vitamin C, indican, pH, and pathology screening.

Interpretation of Laboratory Blood Tests – Blood tests are standard measurements of the patient’s chemistry. Deviations from normal levels reveal when an organ has been compromised. Here they are interpreted from the point of view of enzyme deficiencies and digestive capabilities.

WHAT OTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCED

“I was experiencing extreme fatigue, tired all the time, no energy to do much of anything except breathe, and often that was too hard. I was gaining weight at a very fast pace. My ability to concentrate and focus was gone. Now, after only 6 weeks, I see profound and subtle changes. I can sit down and read. I have resumed studying Chinese language and character writing. I can remember more. I have more energy.
C. A Hilla – Shelby Township, MI

“I have tried every conceivable remedy to heal my ulcers of three years. The enzyme formulas you recommended is the only thing that worked. After having gone through 3 years of misery and pain…the enzymes alleviated the pain within 2 days and after a course of treatment, I now enjoy good health and eating again.” L. B. London, England

“While bending under a Yucca plant, my eye was poked by one of the sharp, pointed leaves. It was extremely painful. I went to the doctor. He said my pupil was lacerated and I needed to wear a patch. I was to come back in 4 or 5 days for a reexamined. I called Phoenix Health Services to see if there were any suggestions. I was recommended to use enzyme formulas which I started taking immediately. When I returned to the doctor he was amazed how quickly it was healing. – M. B. Kalamazoo, MI
